Day 8: Holy Ghost Service – Rev Scott Webb

The final session of WAFBEC 2015 was the Holy Ghost service with Rev Scott Webb teaching and countless manifestations of the Holy Spirit throughout the service.

Reading from 1 Cor 2: 1-5 where Paul stated that he didn’t come in human wisdom but in spirit and in power. He noted that Africans and Nigerians are familiar with the spirit realm and the power resident it. Rev Webb went ahead to state that while the devil has some power, God’s power is far greater.

Acts 1:2, Mark 5:6

Rev Scott explained how Adam was not naked in the Garden of Eden as most paintings depict but rather that he was clothed from the inside with God’s glory. This glory manifested and radiated externally, so that it appeared that two flames were present and walking about in the garden.

Using the example of the demon-possessed man in Mark 5:2, he pointed out that even though the people of that town were afraid of the man, the demons however were afraid of Jesus. They recognized Jesus at once because He was carrying the Glory of God on His inside. Rev. Scott pointed out that the devil is afraid of the believer because the believer carries the Glory of God in his spirit. However, what the devil does is to keep the believer in the dark so that he doesn’t realize the immensity of that authority.

In order for the Holy Spirit to work, we have to yield ourselves to Him and that means we have to do something to receive the supernatural. Citing various examples from the Bible including the story of the lepers who came to meet Jesus and the woman with the issue of blood, he showed that everyone who received from Jesus either did something or were told by Jesus to do something. Rev Scott added that sometimes, all it takes is an action on our part and like Mary said at the wedding of Cana, “whatever he tells you to do, do it.” Not blindly, but expectantly.

In citing the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal, Rev Webb pointed out the fact that Elijah didn’t try to make it easy for God i.e. he poured water on the sacrifice before asking God to send fire to consume it. The problem with believers, he noted, is that they try to make things easy for God instead of simply believing in His ability.

Using Luke 10: 17, Rev. Webb showed that the devil backed off because the disciples were sent in Jesus name. Believers should not let their rejoicing be based on what the devil did or did not do (verses 19-20), rather they should rejoice because it is already done, because their names are written in the Book of Life and they’re righteous. We should not wait to see the manifestation in order to rejoice, we rejoice right now!

The service then continued in a series of worship sessions with the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands.
